Exciting few days ahead. we’ve been entered into the Merton New business awards! details and registration forms were sent in on friday, and now we just have to wait until 4th August to find out if we’ve been shortlisted. we’re so excited. this could be a MASSIVE achievement if we win. :) cross your fingers for us. we’ll keep you posted!

So we’ve had a little apprentice for the last few weeks, and she’s been doing a great job. not only has she insisted on helping with the cleaning, she’s also helped to lay out all the cupcake cases into the trays, and fill them, and we even got her sticking spots onto a giraffe cake, and then we let her make her own cake. Her name is Adi, and she’s only 7, but her dream is to be a cake maker, so i thought hey, best start training her early, so she’s ready for working here the day she turns 18! :)

the opening day

Firstly i’d like to thank everyone for their support today. it was an amazing opening day. Very exciting and an incredible turn out. :) I was incredibly tired, and it was so surreal, but it really was better than i could have asked for. I’d like to thank Nikki and Christine especially for putting in such a great effort today. and i’d like to thank my mum and dad for being such an amazing support. i really couldn’t have done it with out you.

All 300 cupcakes were eaten, all 6 cupcake bouquets, 4 cakes and 80 cookies were sold. so i’ve INCREDIBLY happy! :D

Thanks again, and hopefully we can keep this shop up and running cos its been a long time coming, and now my dream is reality! :)

2 days til opening!

Well the countdown is very much underway! we have two full days until the opening on Saturday 2nd April…. its a little scary. we have 2 big deliveries still to supposedly arrive, the phone lines aren’t connected yet, so therefore neither is the internet, we have no bin from the council, at the moment no tables in the training room which isn’t going to help with the open day cupcake display, and at this point right now i have NO idea if we’ll be getting our PDQ machines on time.

HOWEVER… we will still be opening! and we will still be enjoying the day.

Still to do…. 9 cakes, 300 cupcakes, 5 cupcake bouquets, and 80 cookies… ALL for saturday morning. its definitely going to be the biggest weekend of my life! Luckily i have Nikki our shop assistant/organiser who is a great help, and thanks to my mum and dad who have been the biggest support… who stay with me at the shop most nights until midnight! we will definitely be in need of a glass of bubbly at the end of this…..

AND TO THINK THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING! :)

So finally the work to the shop has finished. all of the builders have moved out, and we are stocking the shelves. Everything is slowly but surely falling into place.

We’re finally sorted out our logo. we’ve reverted back to the original one, as it best describes our company.

The orders have been taking over my life!!! haha. i never realised quite what i was getting myself into. its like a playground for cakey people. The amount of items to choose from! i never realised that there were THAT many different types of cutters, or chocolate products, or colours, or brands of dust. the best order that i’ve made so far has to be the rainbowdust one. £1300 on glitter! :) it looks great on the shelves!

The signs are yet to go up, but we’re getting there! hopefully this week! :)

Work on the shop has well and truly begun. The stud walls are all in, the kitchen has been ordered, and the walls are being plastered. Most of the electrics are in, and by the looks of things we’re about a month ahead of schedule. Things have suddenly jumped forwards, and we’re looking at opening around the 1st of March 2011!

The swanky new kitchen is being delivered in a week and a half and i cannot wait for it to get fitted, so i can finally have the space to create the cakes. :)

I lost my grandmother a few years ago, but her legacy lives on through me (i hope) Edna May was one of the best cake decorators in New Zealand in her day, and although are styles are very different, i’d like to hope she’s happy that her passion was passed down the line.

I wanted to name the company after her, but sadly the name had already been registered… so i took the next best thing. And the shop we’ve now taken on almost sits on Edna Road. haha.

So i hope that my efforts do her proud. She once had her own bakery, and sold it in later life. Now i have my own cake shop, and i hope it lasts me as well as it did her.

So we have a new venue… finally….. 582 Kingston Road, London, SW20 8DN

Opening soon. Got the keys this week, and work should be starting tomorrow. In a month or so it will be all up and running, and i can finally move my cakes out of my kitchen! :)

We’re converting an old sign shop into a kitchen/training room/shop.

You’ll be able to come to us for supplies and cake related goodies, training, or for a cake itself. Hopefully catering for all the needs of cake eaters.

We’ll be specialising in birthday cakes, inspired by the children i’ve nannied for over the years, who to this day get more excited about their cakes, than the presents i give them.

Its still early days, but at the exciting part of choosing all the equipment and tools, and choosing suppliers and stock.

cakeology is basically defined as the art of cakes. taking my background in design, and my love for baking, I’ve combined the two. Many different places are trying to do the same thing, but i like to think we can offer that little bit extra in a cake. Something personalised, tasty, artistic and reasonably priced.

Working with sugar and icing is basically like working with other materials, you just have to find the technique. I randomly stumbled across my technique through my hobby of cake making. As the orders began to pour in a few years ago, the cakes have been received a lot of interest, leading me to give up my job and begin this as a career. Although i am predominantly self taught, i have taken courses to build up skills.

The best part of the job is i love what i do. i’m one of those people that wakes up in the morning and looks forward to doing what they do. I’ve now taken it from a home based company to opening a shop… a big step i know, but one that i’m sure that will be worth it!

After 6 months of looking for the perfect venue i found it. 582 Kingston Road, London, SW20 8DN… it has the right feel, the right size and definitely the right price.

I’m hoping to inspire other people to learn my talent, and be able to enjoy it. i swear the best reward is seeing someone’s face light up at the sight of the cake!!!
